3. Brief Description

Job rotation is a process in which employees systematically and intentionally rotate among different job positions or tasks within an organization for a predetermined period of time.

4. Purpose / When to Use

It is used to develop employees’ skills and knowledge, increase their flexibility and interchangeability, reduce the monotony of work, and foster a better understanding of how the entire organization functions. It is an effective tool for developing talent and future leaders.

5. Procedure / How to Apply It

1. Identify the objectives and target group: Why do you want to implement a rotation program, and who is it intended for (e.g., for a trainee program, for high-potential employees, for production operators)?
2. Plan the rotation schedule: Create a structured plan specifying which positions the employee will rotate through, when, and for how long.
3. Prepare both the employee and the host team.
4. Provide mentoring and support during the rotation.
5. Evaluate the benefits of the rotation for both the employee and the company once it is complete.

6. A Real-World Example

At a manufacturing company, assembly line operators rotate among three different workstations each week. This reduces the risk of repetitive strain injuries (RSI), makes the work less monotonous, and allows each operator to cover for their colleagues when necessary.

7. Benefits

- Increases workforce flexibility and interchangeability
.- Develops employees' skills and knowledge
.- Boosts motivation and combats burnout
.- Gives employees a better understanding of how the company operates
.- Helps identify hidden talents.

8. Risks / Limits

- Temporary decline in productivity: Until an employee becomes familiar with a new position, their performance is lower
.- Training costs.
- It can lead to dissatisfaction if employees are forced to rotate against their will
.- Not all positions are suitable for rotation (e.g., highly specialized expert positions).

9. Practical Tips

- Rotations should be voluntary unless they are part of a development program.
- Create a clear plan and set clear expectations for each rotation.
- Ensure that the employee on rotation has a mentor in their new position.
