3. Brief Description

Intrinsic motivation techniques focus on strengthening the motivation that stems from within a person—from the joy of the activity itself, from a sense of meaning, and from self-actualization. This contrasts with extrinsic motivation, which is based on rewards and punishments (the “carrot-and-stick” approach).

4. Purpose / When to Use

They are used to foster long-term commitment, creativity, and proactivity among employees. They are particularly important in creative, knowledge-based, and complex work, where traditional external rewards often fail or are even counterproductive.

5. Procedure / How to Apply It

According to Daniel Pink’s theory, three elements are key:
1. Autonomy: Give people the freedom and trust to decide how, when, with whom, and on what they work. Allow them to manage their own work.
2. Mastery: Create conditions that allow people to continuously improve in what matters to them. Provide constructive feedback, appropriate challenges, and opportunities for learning.
3. Purpose: Clearly communicate the “why” behind the work they do. Connect their daily work to the organization’s higher purpose and mission.

6. A Real-World Example

Instead of telling the programmer exactly how to solve the problem, the manager says: "Our goal is to speed up page loading for customers so they have a better experience (Purpose). I trust your abilities; find the best technical solution (Autonomy). If you need a course or consultation to learn how to do this, let me know (Mastery).”

7. Benefits

- It leads to higher-quality work and greater creativity
.- It fosters long-term commitment and loyalty
.- It is more sustainable and effective than external motivation
.- It increases job satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment.

8. Risks / Limits

- It requires a high degree of trust and maturity on the part of both managers and employees
.- It runs counter to the traditional, directive management style
.- Basic external factors (salary, job security) must be addressed. If people are not paid fairly, intrinsic motivation will not work
.- Not everyone desires the same degree of autonomy.

9. Practical Tips

- Start with small steps toward autonomy: For example, give the team the freedom to choose the tools they work with.
- Regularly ask about the purpose: During meetings, remind the team how their work helps customers or contributes to the company’s vision.
- Recognize effort and progress, not just results.
