1. Method Name

Mentoring & Coaching

2. Alternative Names

Mentoring, Coaching

3. Brief Description

These are two distinct but related methods of personal development. Mentoring is a long-term relationship in which a more experienced person (the mentor) shares their knowledge, experience, and advice with a less experienced person (the mentee). Coaching is more short-term and performance-oriented, where the coach helps the coachee find their own solutions and achieve specific goals by asking powerful questions, rather than giving advice.

4. Purpose / When to Use

They are used to accelerate employees' personal and professional development, to develop leaders, to nurture talent, and to transfer knowledge within the organization.

5. Procedure / How to Apply It

Mentoring:
1. Implementation of a formal mentoring program (matching mentors and mentees).
2. Defining goals and expectations at the start of the relationship.
3. Regular, informal meetings.
Coaching:
1. Agreeing on a coaching goal.
2. Using coaching models such as GROW (Goal, Reality, Options, Will).
3. The coach asks questions, listens actively, and helps the coachee maintain responsibility for their actions.

6. A Real-World Example

Mentoring: An experienced senior programmer (mentor) meets with a junior programmer (mentee) once a month to discuss career goals, technologies, and obstacles at work. Coaching: A team leader (coach) notices that a member of their team is having trouble with time management. During a one-on-one meeting, they don’t tell the team member what to do, but instead ask questions: “What specifically is causing you the most stress? What options do you see for changing this? Which one will you try first?”

7. Benefits

- Effective and personalized development
.- Increases engagement and loyalty
.- Improves the transfer of knowledge and corporate culture
.- Develops leadership skills among mentors and coaches.

8. Risks / Limits

- Poor "matching" of mentor and mentee
.- Lack of time and commitment on both sides.
- Coaching without training: Managers who try to coach without knowing basic techniques may end up just giving advice
.- Failure to understand the difference: Using mentoring where coaching is needed, and vice versa.

9. Practical Tips

- Every manager should be a coach. It is one of the most important skills of a modern leader
.- Mentoring doesn’t have to be strictly formal. Encourage informal relationships and knowledge sharing within teams
.- Reverse mentoring: A younger employee can mentor a more senior one, for example, in the area of digital technologies.
